September 26, 1960

For the first time in history, a presidential debate is televised. The showdown between presidential candidates John F. Kennedy and Richard M. Nixon took place in a Chicago film studio. Kennedy was the apparent victor of this debate, their first of four, due to his natural charisma and ease in front of the camera.

September 28, 1781

The battle of Yorktown begins as George Washington, commanding a combined French-American force of 17,000 troops, lays seige to British-controlled Yorktown, against General Cornwallis and 9,000 British troops.

September 28, 1066

One of the most significant days in the history of Britain and the English language: William the conqueror, claiming his right to the English throne, invades England with an army of Normans. William would go on to conquer England and Wales, affecting English history possibly more than any other single event.

October 1, 1890 

An act of Congress creates Yosemite National Park, which is is home to such natural wonders as the giant sequoia trees and Half Dome. The area had previously been declared a public trust of California, which was the first time that the government protected land for public enjoyment.

October 2, 1967

The first Black Justice on the U.S. Supreme Court, Thurgood Marshall, is sworn into office. Marshall had worked throughout the 1940s and ‘50s to end official racial segregation.
