Lost Ring At Radar

When completing physical training up at Radar Ridge, it can be easy to misplace anything you brought with you. It’s no stress to forget a water bottle or lose a pair of earbuds, but an engagement ring is another thing entirely.
After c/Sgt David Balkovetz, of Alpha Company, lost his engagement ring at the recreational fields on October 17, he alerted his peers and reached out to a local cadet meme page through Instagram, which spread the news of the missing item and a reward of $150 to whoever could locate it. Later that same day, two recruits set out to return it.
c/Colin McBride-Parker and c/Nathan Schillinger, of Alpha Company, are roommates—both in their first semester as freshmen. When asked why they went searching for the ring, Schillinger said: “He was in a tough situation and if I were in his shoes, I would hope someone would do the same for me.”
After searching through the parking lot and fields, the roommates located the ring and returned it to c/Sgt Balkovetz—neither of the recruits accepting the prize money. “We refused the reward because it didn’t feel right to take it,” McBride-Parker said. “We just wanted to do something nice for him and return an important thing he had lost.” With the treasure now in the possession of its rightful owner and the search completed, the two roommates left with the satisfaction of a good deed rather than cash.
